What is Sedation?

Sedation is a term used to reference a medically or chemically induced state of relaxation during dental and oral surgery procedures. Undergoing oral surgery can be stressful for patients who experience dental anxiety or those who are undergoing complex procedures, making it difficult to get the proper care that’s needed. At Santa Clara Oral Surgery and Dental Implants, we offer a variety of anesthesia options to patients to help them feel more relaxed and comfortable.

Benefits of Sedation for Oral Surgery Procedures

Don’t let fear of the unknown stand in the way of taking care of your oral health. Our team is dedicated to putting patients at ease from the moment they arrive, including offering a variety of anesthesia options so you can keep your beautiful smile healthy and vibrant.

Benefits of of sedation may include:

  • Feel more relaxed. Put your dental anxiety to rest. Sedation can ease you into a calm and relaxed state for the duration of the procedure.
  • Reduce stress. Anxiety and stress can be tied to extenuating issues with the cardiovascular and digestive systems, but when it comes to dental procedures, sedation can alleviate these concerns by stopping the stress in its tracks.
  • Procedure seems shorter. Time can have the illusion of passing more quickly when under the effects of sedation, so a long procedure can feel as if it lasted just minutes.
  • Overcome dental anxiety. Some patients discover after undergoing sedation for the first time, they no longer experience the dental anxiety they once did. This can be a lasting effect for some, potentially ending their dental anxiety permanently.
  • Safe. Sedation is safe for most patients who are in overall good health. For those who may be at risk, the patient’s primary care physician is consulted to ensure that undergoing sedation is safe. Sometimes, sedation can even have the benefit of further increasing safety thanks to the patient’s relaxed state that keeps them calm and still throughout the procedure.

Are You a Good Candidate for Sedation?

If you experience feelings of anxiety, nervousness, or stress about dental visits, whether for a routine cleaning or a dental procedure, then sedation may be right for you. Sedation can be a helpful tool in managing or overcoming these feelings so you can continue to receive the care you need. A good candidate for sedation is in overall good health and receives approval from their primary care physician.

FAQs About Sedation for Dental & Oral Surgery Procedures

Is IV sedation the same as general anesthesia?
IV sedation helps patients relax as they slip into a partially conscious state in which they are breathing on their own but don’t remember much of the procedure. General anesthesia renders the patients completely unconscious. General anesthesia requires a machine that aids the patient in breathing and sometimes requires admittance to a hospital or surgery center for proper administration. Patients who elect IV sedation can undergo their procedures in a dental office.
Is sedation covered by insurance?
Dental insurance, in many cases, covers the cost of sedation as part of dental benefits. We are here to help you navigate the expense of your procedure and offer payment options and financing to fit your budget.
Can I drive to and from my appointment if I have sedation?
Depending on the type of anesthesia you elect to receive for your procedure, you may be able to safely drive yourself home after your appointment. For example, nitrous oxide is not administered until you are seated in the dental chair and therefore doesn’t take effect until you start breathing it. Its effects dissipate soon after you are no longer breathing it in, so once you feel it fade away, it is safe to drive again. With oral sedatives, they must be taken prior to arriving at your appointment to allow the medication time to take effect, and they may also take several hours to wear off, so in this instance you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. With IV sedation or general anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you to the appointment and back home after the procedure.
How long will you feel the effects of sedation?
The effects of anesthesia can be felt for varying lengths of time, depending on the type you opt for. For example, the effects of nitrous oxide fade rapidly from the moment you stop breathing it in, whereas with oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, the effects can last between 4 and 12 hours.
Will you feel any pain with sedation?
No, while under the effects of sedation you will not be able to feel any pain.
How safe is sedation?
Sedation is proven to be very safe and as such, is commonly used throughout dental practices for a multitude of procedures. For patients in good overall health, sedation is very safe. During your consultation, we will review and consider all options and discuss any concerns before deciding on the path that’s right for you.
